Time to Meet Your New Legislator

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

On December 14, 2016, I met with incoming Senator Dale Fowler at my office. We discussed ISAPN and AANP, the roles of Advanced Practice Nurses and Nurse Practitioners. Interestingly, he did not know what a Nurse Practitioner did. He did recognize some names of Nurse Practitioners from his county, but was not familiar with the role of a NP. Door wide open-we discussed at length the role of a Nurse Practitioner and other disciplines, the deterrents we face in providing health care to our patients and the recent Veterans Affairs approval for full scope of practice to nurse practitioners, nurse midwifes and clinical nurse specialists (pending nurse anesthestists). Discussed past actions/goals by ISAPN and investigated his thoughts on full practice authority. He would not give a full support statement but did say he would keep his mind open and would rely on me as an expert to give him information as we moved forward. Great news-incoming Senator Dale Fowler did NOT mention the medical society throughout the conversation and didn’t ask “what do the docs think”. I mentioned to him that there were plenty of patients throughout the state and we need not be territorial in providing healthcare-plenty for all! Ending our meeting, there was an exchange of cell phone numbers and email addresses for future contact.
